Williams grew up on Chicago’s South Side. Joe performed with big bands like Lionel Hampton and Count Basie. He joined Basie’s band in 1954 and remained friends and worked with the Count throughout his career. 

When I photographed Joe in 1964 he was with Basie and singing “Every Day I Have The Blues”. One of my all time favorite Vocals.
